First cover, a literal ‘seeing of the world,’ a view of Earth from space. Linking to the books focus on images, the cover makes reference to the ‘blue marble’ photograph of Earth taken in 1972. The term also refers to a collection of images of the Earth from space. The image is mentioned in the book itself.

These ideas were too specific and focused on one image, rather than the book as a whole

Even with the addition of the figures on a phone and a laptop, I wanted to push the book’s link to technology and visual culture further.
The main figure is still at an art gallery, to show the book’s commentary to art history and theory, though the images displayed include both mix famous art pieces and modern ‘selfie’ photographs, while the figure looks at a similar variety of works on a screen.
Reworking after feedback, incorporating the idea of technology and images into the cover more.

Mind and Machines - W Sluckin

Picture
About the book:

Published 1 January 1954

Mind and Machines is a detailed look into the relation between cybernetics and human psychology. The book explores the idea of using computers as models for human mental processes, to develop a further understanding of them. Cybernetics was just beginning to cement itself as an idea at the time, the 1950s being an important year for its development.

The American Character - Margaret Mead

Picture
While I was unable to find the book itself, I did find a review of the book published in March 1945 in ‘The Quarterly Review of Biology Volume 20’

The book is an analysis of the American character, around the time America had entered World War Two, Mead looking specifically at the way young Americans are raised.

She concludes the American character is “a character that is geared to success and to movement, invigorated by obstacles and difficulties, but plunged into guilt and despair by catastrophic failure or a wholesale alteration in the upward and onward pace; a character on which aggressiveness is uncertain and undefined, to which readiness to fight anymore who starts a fight and undersides to engage in violence have both been held up by virtues”

Mead analyses the American character for the purpose of finding out in which way said American character can be used and ‘mobilised’ to win the war.
